Blizzard announced today that they would be shutting down both the gold and real-money auction houses from Diablo 3 next year.
The cited reasoning is that the auction houses were interfering in the game’s core gameplay of killing monsters for loot.
Initially the market was brought in as a platform where players can easily trade loot. However, this became more of a trend and players started out to just farm for cash and then stick to buying their items through the auction houses.
This ultimately caused a bit of a stale in the game where players would stick more to the market places than the game’s world.
When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades,” reads the post by production director John Hight. But as we’ve mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the [auction house] system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo’s core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot.
The auction house will be shut down on March 18, 2014 and more information regarding the changes will be shared later in the coming months.
“We’re working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible,” Hight wrote.
Hight expects the game’s new Loot 2.0 system to bring a “more rewarding game experience” when the auctions houses shut down. Next year Diablo 3 will simply task with players to journey the world more, kill more and loot more.
