Blizzard’s latest dungeon crawl has had a rocky start, but that doesn’t stop the players from flocking to it anyway. However, it’s the fact that Diablo 3 was meant for killing monsters and looting, as well as hacking problems that exploited the new system, that has led Blizzard to the ultimate realization that the auction house was a waste of time. As of March 18 next year, Diablo 3‘s auction house will be no more.
It may be that when Blizzard releases their upcoming “Reaper of Souls” expansion, the auction house may be removed in the process, making for a less noticeable transition to a game that puts the focus more fully on dungeon crawls. Those details have not been announced at this time, but speculation suggests it would make sense.
Diablo 3 production director John Hight stated on Blizzard’s blog:
“When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we’ve mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo‘s core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we’ve decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from [Diablo 3].”
Blizzard’s infamous dungeon crawl may just go back to the way it was in Diablo II, nixing the Diablo 3 auction house in favor of player-to-player trades. For now it’s anyone’s guess how Blizzard will inevitably handle this.
